He is a columnist and writer for the -Times who published an article titled “Messages on Prostitution,” which caused quite a stir. With a title like this, one would have expected her to talk about how badly local escorts sex workers have been treated over the years and perhaps how some rape cases are being handled. Still, it will probably leave us in the dark about how people think about sex work—local escort women.
Of course, that is too optimistic. Why on earth would the media want to say good or positive things about the local sex industry? It’s asking too much, mainly since the local escorts sex industry is often blamed as the cause of just about everything that happens in the world.
Mitchell’s article doesn’t start well by stating that “a recent case involving a prostitute and a john has made a mockery of a rape victim,” but the further you read into the article, the worse it gets. She describes a situation where a customer tried to book her through a website but decided not to pay upon arrival. It’s unclear whether he didn’t have the money or if he’d planned it from the start. In either case, he pulled out a gun and forced himself on her.
This is a terrible incident, but Mitchell has no sympathy whatsoever. Instead, she quickly launches into the story saying that “most prostitutes in this situation would immediately run to a pimp” and that the man “is currently in custody on charges of aggravated sexual assault,” and the reason for this is that “an unidentified 24-year-old woman was reported to the police.” She explained that she doesn’t have “a little bit of sympathy” but is “grateful” that he wasn’t charged with kidnapping an innocent woman off the street. She seems to think that raping local escorts is way better than raping anyone else. Unfortunately, it gets even worse!

At this point in the article, I was pretty pissed. I sat there praying for this to be the worst and for him to keep telling me this was a terrible joke and that it meant nothing to her. Of course, the world doesn’t work that way, and Ms. Mitchell explained why she felt that way.
